This course provides educators with a comprehensive exploration of the Science of Reading (SoR), emphasizing research-based literacy instruction. Through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous modules, participants will deepen their understanding of the SoR framework, explore evidence-based instructional strategies, and connect successful classroom practices to foundational literacy research.

Key topics include the most up to date research on the Science of Reading from Simple View of Reading, Scarborough’s Reading Rope, and Active View of Reading. Participants will engage in learning about oral language development, phonological awareness, phonics, language comprehension, fluency, and reading comprehension. Educators will engage in self-guided study, reflective discussions, collaborative and hands-on activities. Participants will engage in 10 modules (5 synchronous with an instructor and 5 asynchronous on a learning management system).

This course is ideal for educators seeking to align their literacy instruction with the latest research in the Science of Reading, offering practical tools and strategies to enhance students' reading development. The target age range is Pre-k to Grade 3. However, the practical tools and strategies which the course will provide will be applicable to those teaching students of all ages. Further, this course is open to all educators.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Reflect on how historical and current literacy research informs teaching practices.

  • Explain the most recent research on Science of Reading.

  • Identify and implement evidence-based strategies to support the key elements of the Science of Reading (oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, language comprehension, fluency, and reading comprehension).

  • Utilize NYSED resources and research by experts such as Dr. Nonie Lesaux to integrate the Science of Reading into their literacy instruction.
